![]() ![]() DeWalt then plans to continue its global debut of the technology through Spring of 2022. The DeWalt PowerStack 20V Max Compact Battery (DCBP034) begins rolling out in North America starting December 1, 2021. DCBP034C Compact Battery Starter Kit with DCB112 Charger – $149.For now, DeWalt has three options for their new batteries with PowerStack technology: Perhaps these photos can help show the key difference in both length and width:ĭeWalt PowerStack Battery Pricing and Availabilityįortunately, DeWalt gave us pricing on the new PowerStack battery pack as well as some available configurations. The specs above form some of the total picture. These new packs offer a lot more power density, which means you get more power in less space. ![]() The real big deal-aside from energy output-has to be the size. While current 20V Max batteries use either 18650 or 21700 cells, PowerStack uses a literal “stack” of 5 lithium-polymer pouches. The big deal behind DeWalt PowerStack batteries is the use of stacked lithium-ion polymer pouches instead of cylindrical cells. But then again, you get the work done quicker, which may very well even out the runtime. You clearly get better performance from a DeWalt PowerStack battery than the standard 2.0Ah compact pack. If there was any doubt remaining, this final test sealed the deal. That’s a solid result in itself, but we flipped the drill into low gear just to see what time differences there were. The 2.0Ah battery was only able to complete one hole in high speed and failed on the other four. In high speed, the PowerStack battery did just fine, averaging 2.25 seconds. We decided to take it a step further and shifted to the DCD797 compact hammer drill with a 3/4-inch auger bit in double-stacked 2×4 studs. It’s not quite as strong as the much larger 5.0Ah battery, though. Here are the results:Ĭlearly, PowerStack has an advantage in this test. We also tested a 5.0Ah battery to see how it compares. We started with the DCF850 impact driver setting 8-inch GRK Fasteners RSS screws into stacked OSB. We were able to test the DeWalt PowerStack battery against the standard 20V Max 2.0Ah battery and the results were telling. UPDATE: DeWalt PowerStack Vs DeWalt 2.0Ah Battery Tested ![]() DeWalt also seems to be the first major power tool brand to use pouch cell batteries in the construction industry. Certainly you're not going to put it on a blower or weed trimmer or similar, but that's not what it was intended to do.This might be the biggest announcement made since DeWalt Tool Connect came online. Run time for tools that are intermittently used like an impact or similar are more than adequate for most users. Even a year ago before these batteries were mainstream you had to sacrifice some of the compactness of a gun like the 923 by running it with a 5ah. Paired with a compact impact like the DCF923 you get 90% of the performance of a year or two ago's "mid torque" impacts in a gun that is smaller than the smallest impacts that were available. Also the 1.7ah is in no way a proof of concept, it's an initial offering that fits certain niches. None of Dewalts batteries have a significant drop off in power over their capacity in my experience. The advantage of the powerstack is that it has a peak discharge rate comparable to a 5ah or so "double stack" in a form factor smaller than the "single stack" 2ah/1.5ah kit battery. If this kit was < $50, I might consider it, but I'll stick to the slim 4Ah as my go-to for now. The 5Ah version is a great battery, but still ridiculously overpriced for what it is. ![]() But being only a 1.7Ah battery, it's not advisable to use this battery on any tool that requires a high level of draw since it will simply die faster.Īt 1.7Ah, it's more of a proof of concept than anything else. The XR has an output curve that drops as capacity drains. Meaning it will put out the same wattage when full as it does right before it dies. The ONLY advantage to these Powerstacks over a regular XR battery is the ability to provide more consistent power along the full drain. I know because I sell all of my extra kit chargers. The charger goes for $20 new on marketplace. ![]()
